PENINGKATAN KOMPETENSI BERBAHASA INGGRIS FUNGSIONAL KONTEKSTUAL BAGI CALON PEKERJA MIGRAN KECAMATAN MOYUDAN KABUPATEN SLEMAN

Abstract

The District of Moyudan, Sleman Yogyakarta has a relatively high unemployment rate with the
job seekers of 6.109 male and 5.293 female. Most of them (especially female) desiredly want to
work at overseas as Indonesian Overseas Workers, or Tenaga Kerja Indonesia (TKI). The
problem is, they must not merely have job-skill, but also have to be able to use the target
language in the job target country, at least English as a means of communication with their new
environment. In facts, several research showed that they are not able to communicate in English
well. Meanwhile, English is a key instrument to communicate especially with their employers.
Based on this fact, this program of Ipteks bagi Masyarakat (IbM) aimed at conducting English
training especially for community of the migrant workers candidates. The training program was
held by using Functional English Learning Model (Materi Ajar Bahasa Inggris Fungsional
/MABIF). The training was conducted for 24 meetings and followed by 40 participants. They
consisted of 20 undergraduates degree, 17 higher level students, and 3 person were the
graduates of Senior Highschools. This program resulted: (1) MABIF with level of significance of
ï¡ = 0.04; (2) Article of Publication in a Daily Regional Newspaper (Kedaulatan Rakyat) and a
Journal (Socio-Humaniora); (3) Training Certificate showed Functional English Mastery; and
(4) the Existence/the establishment of Association of Moyudan’s Overseas Worker Candidates
(Paguyuban Calon Pekerja Migran di Moyudan) to keep the project sustainability. Kata kunci:
