Abstract


AbSTRACT

Problem solving is necessary both in the learning process and in life. Problem solving requires a high level of thinking ability. Particularly in the problem solving geometry that is often confronted is the problem of proof. Through proof other than knowing the truth of a theorem also can hone students' logical thinking ability. The purpose of this research is to identify the problem solving ability of geometry proof by the student of mathematics teacher candidate of the University of PGRI Madiun. The type of this research is descriptive with the qualitative approach. The subject of study as many as two high and low academic students who perform the proof of geometry theorem based on Polya problem solving steps. The result of this research concludes that the ability of problem solving of geometric proof of high-ability students in every problem-solving step is the students able to determine hypothesis and conclusion with their mathematical language, linking and using definitions, postulates, and theorems that have been proved before to make logical proof with visualization. Highly capable students can develop different methods of verification than has been done. Low-ability students have not been able to formulate conclusions with their mathematical language and have not been able to make connections between definitions, postulates, and theorems that have not been able to develop logical proofs. Low-ability students have not been able to set up different evidence than has been done. Associated with problem solving ability found a factor that significantly affects student problem solving ability that is self learning (self regulated learning).
