Abstract


The store ability and seeds quality during storage was influenced by initial condition of seeds before the storage (water content) and method of seed storage. This research was aimed to study the effect of water content and storage containers on the seed viability of mungbean and population of Callosobruchus chinensis and to know the best water content and storage container to maintain seed viability of mungbean. A single factor which was arranged in Completely Randomized Design was used in the experiment, with nine treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of seed storage with water content < 10 % in plastic sack; 10-12 % in plastic sack; >12% in plastic sack; < 10 % in wheat sack; 10-12 % in wheat sack, >12% in wheat sack; < 10 % in coarse sack; 10-12% in coarse sack and >12% in coarse sack. The results of the research showed that plastic sack in various seed water contents wers more capable of maintaining the mungbean seed viability better than the wheat and coarse sack. The wheat sack was able to keep seed viability of mungbean only in <10 % water content. The population of Callosobruchus chinensis was more heavily influenced by the water content than the storage container. Key words: water content, storage container, mungbean, Callosobuchus chinensis
